Do you know that trees talk? Well they do. They talk to each other, and they’ll talk to you, if you will listen… I have learned a lot from trees… sometimes about the weather, sometimes about animals, sometimes about the Great Spirit… As I understand nature’s ruler, He would not restrict the truth to a few favored humans, allowing the others to remain in the eternal darkness. If the great Spirit is prepared to reveal secrets of importance to people, He will give all humans in all lands an equal chance of getting that enlightenment.

Gene’s story began in the wide-open landscapes of South Dakota, where a deep connection to nature first took root. Growing up surrounded by open skies, prairie winds, and quiet resilience, he developed a lifelong respect for the land and the rhythms of the natural world.
From an early age, Gene showed curiosity, independence, and a steady determination. Whether exploring outdoors or learning through experience, these formative years shaped the values that would guide him throughout his life—hard work, humility, and an enduring sense of purpose.

Gene’s career was not just a profession—it was a calling. As a ranger and wildlife biologist, he spent decades working in forests, mountains, and remote landscapes, protecting and understanding the natural world he loved.
His work with the United States Forest Service reflected both his expertise and his passion. Whether studying ecosystems, managing wildlife, or living in the field, Gene embraced the challenges and rewards of a life outdoors. He found meaning in quiet places, where observation, patience, and respect for nature guided every decision.
At Colorado State University, Gene deepened his commitment to the natural sciences, earning degrees in Wildlife Biology and Forest Entomology. These years marked a time of intellectual growth, discipline, and discovery.
He approached his studies with the same thoughtful perspective that defined his life—questioning, learning, and seeking practical understanding. The ideas and principles he developed here became the foundation for a lifelong career rooted in science, stewardship, and service.

Gene built both his career and his home in the Colorado mountains, where his love for nature and family came together. After earning his degrees from Colorado State University, he began a 40-year career with the United States Forest Service, focusing on wildlife management and field work.
In retirement, Gene continued his connection to the natural world through his “Neighborhood Tree Doctor” business in Pueblo, Colorado. More than anything, he valued time spent with people and trees—two constants that defined his life.
